Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment
Those with Adult ADHD have a number of issues to contend with, and in my clients with ADHD, I am able to work with all of them. First there are the primary symptoms of ADHD, which include quick mood changes, extreme creativity, difficulty staying on topic and challenges making connections with other people. Then, there are often the secondary conditions brought on by ADHD, which cause issues like anxiety and depression. These conditions are often brought-on by the ADHD itself, as those with ADHD have difficulty relating, difficulty with money and sometimes have difficulty with substance abuse.
My belief is that the relationship between client and therapist is what heals the client. As such, when i work with those with ADHD, I will often be very straightforward with them when they ask questions about whether I'm following them or not. Similarly, I will be be very direct and offer my observations about their behaviour as I see it. The goal is to build a trusting relationship that reflects how the individual with ADHD functions in the world outside the therapy room. This will allow for the creation of strategies and awarenesses to cope with situations in the client's everyday life. With the relationship intact, we are better able to discussion secondary conditions such as anxiety and depression, as the individual with ADHD has learned how to effectively communicate and listen within the therapy session. This dynamic makes it much easier to address these issues in an authentic manner, which often leads to quick resolution of the other issues faced by those living with ADHD.
