Treatment for Anxiety

I see many patients with Generalized Anxiety.  Anxiety is another word for fear - we become scared that we cannot get out of or "work-through" situations in our life.  This often leads people to feel that their lives and circumstances are beyond their control.  We want to flee or change a situation, but cannot do so.  When we cannot change what is around is, we may experience chronic over-thinking, or a belief that situations we encounter are much more threatening to us than they actually are.  Those with Genealized Anxiety often describe situations and feelings like this as "spinning" in their own thoughts an minds.

The good news for those facing anxiety is that psychotherapy is keenly suited for helping you get better.  We work on restoring your ability to make changes to your circumstances and yourself. I often work in the "Here and Now" of the therapy situation which allows us to address the anxiety as it happens.  There are many ways to address the anxiety that comes up in the therapy session - including role play, deepening discussion or behavioural approaches that seek to have the brain change how one thinks about situations that make them anxious.  Regardless, psychotherapy is highly suited to treat most anxiety conditions in a way that makes people feel much better about themselves and others.

Anxiety can be debilitating.  It is often like living in a glass box.  There are things you know you want to do, but get held back or nervous about doing them.  Sometimes it is easier to get angry and act-out instead.

Often, working through anxiety is done by changing focus and learning how to live in the "Here And Now" of a situation.  In the end, someone may still feel a bit threatened, or a bit concerned, but at the same time they will know that they are safe - this makes them more authentic.
